Removing Windows update KB3102429

Recently, Windows released an update that prevents reports in BusinessVision and BVEssentials from exporting to a PDF. You’ll be glad to know that the update resolved problems for the Azerbaijani Monat and the Georgian Lair currency symbols; however it broke all software that uses ‘export as PDF’ functionality using Crystal 9 and 10 (which is what BusinessVision and BVEssentials use).

The following steps remove the offending update, and then prevent it from happening again. These steps are basically the same for Windows 7, 8.1 and 10.

To remove the update:

Start -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> View installed updates -> type KB3102429 into ‘Search Installed Updates’ -> double click to remove/uninstall

You will be prompted to reboot your computer.

To prevent it from happening again:

Once you have rebooted your computer…

Start -> Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Update -> Select Updates to Install -> Critical Updates

Right click on the KB in question (KB3102529) and select ‘Hide’.

If you have not been getting this error, it could actually be a bad sign for two reasons:

  1. Your Windows might be out of date. You should have your system set to Update Windows Automatically – this is a rare exception where a Windows update has caused grief.
  2. It also might mean that you are not emailing any order confirmations, invoices or purchase orders, which means that you could be more productive and customer friendly and/or that you could save money by not having to mail documents.

Please contact me at rita.bloem@rogers.com if the latter is the case, and you would like to being using emailing capabilities of BusinessVision and/or BVEssentials.
